For those interested. We ran into a little rain today. Sprinkles and rain most of the day. But hey, we're burning gas and killing bugs, so we're having fun! Great grub at Jason's in-laws! Nice folks! Got to go for a ride in the dune buggy too. |

On my way to Virginia, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike I passed a Wineberry ST sitting on a flatbed tow truck. It was a construction zone and I spotted it too late to stop. Any word if anyone is late turning up? I think NeSTOC is going on also so maybe it was someone headed there. |

Jan and I arrived in Grottoes yesterday and rode by the motel. It is abut ten miles from her brother's house, where we will be staying. There is a Honda dealership about a half mile north of the motel and a half mile in the other direction is a Mrs. Rowe's Buffet!! Can't get any better that that. Today I will ride up to the Parkway and then to visit the Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg Battlefields. There is will stamp my National Park Service Passport and try to complete the Iron Butt National Parks Ride. Ride safe everyone. |

Folks really know how to live in Kentucky. Here's where the horses live:
Here's where people live:
Course we had to stay at the Microtel... UP, Andee, and me gearing up to go over to Jason's house for a pre-pre ride.
We participated in a negotiation with Jason's oldest, Clay, to do a parade lap around the block, with him as leader on the tank of the blue Yammy. Otherwise he wasn't gonna let us go. Had a great time in the afternoon running some of Jason's favorite local roads. Next day the group totaled 15. Had a nice long day of great roads. Conditions were mixed: nice and dry to raining like crazy. We ate lunch with a guy from Aerostich tours who was working hard scouting the area for good tour routes. Tough job. At the end of the day we headed over to Jason's in-laws house. We were treated like family and fed like kings. What wonderful folks. I had to bail and head back to Nashville before sun up next day so that's all I know. I'm sure there be some very interesting posts coming. The ST on the flat bed truck was NOT one of ours. We're all here at the Inn safe and sound, sorta. In and out of rain all day. Tomorrow is suppose to be nice with temps in the 80's (F). |

Someone must know the answer to this one. When I rode through Kentucky horse country a few years ago all of the horse farms had those classic white fences. Now they're all black. Why the change in color? 2001 Jincheng

Craig - I don't know why the fences are painted black now - maybe so they don't show dirt/wear as easily? There are still a lot of them that are white, but the majority seem to be black now. Big Thanks to everyone who joined the JJJ Ride. It was a great group and nice to see old friends and make new ones. Glad I could escort you guys through some of my favorite roads in the area. I had to teach some of these guys that 'round these parts it's acceptable to use a tree in place of a gas station restroom pics to follow. My in-laws enjoyed having you all and Clay says those that took off without going for a ride on his buggy are chickens FriendSTOC went off without a hitch - BIG THANKS to Tom for putting it on another year. I used today as a day of rest. Went out and washed my bike, hung around the hotel, done some laundry and recharged the batteries for the ride home tomorrow. The others reported a great ride again today and will prob post pics I imagine. The dinner and auction were nice as well, I picked up a Cramp Buster for the ride home tomorrow (the FZ1 has a STIFF throttle spring) and a 'Winter Sucks' coffee mug. Going to get off here and do some packing and get to bed for tomorrow. Sucks how the anticipation caused this trip to take forever to get here and the great fun with friends caused it to fly by so fast. Everyone have a safe ride home and I'll post pics when I get them resized to conform to the forum. ....... (Message edited by number9 on May 31, 2009) |

Okay, here are some of the pics I took along the JJJ ride. Taking the youngest for a ride while UP, Andy and Andeee suit up for the parade lap with the oldest. They'd both been very excited about the 'ST guys' coming to our house and wanted to ride with them.
UP leading the parade lap back in.
UP, Andy, Andeee and I stopping for lunch on the pre-JJJ ride.
The group had planned to eat breakfast at Cracker Barrel for the first day of the JJJ. I got there a few minutes early to warn them of our group coming. I sat out on the rockers enjoying a chew of Skoal waiting on the group to show up.
.... and waited....
... finally the group started to roll in.

Some ate at the hotel and the rest of us ate at the CB. Was a good start to a good day.
We hit some rain and a mix of wet and dry roads. This little road is very sweet. I stopped at the end for a pee break. I don't think the group was used to using the KY bathroom, but they all adapted pretty quick.
We stopped for lunch at a little hole in the wall in Owingsville. They had pretty good grub. A guy riding alone stopped in and ended up joining us for lunch. I didn't know it, but Andy said he was scouting for Aerostich Tours. He tagged along with us for a while but he should have stayed with us for a couple more miles instead of peeling off and he would have got to see the NADA Tunnel and the sweet road running through it. His loss.
The NADA Tunnel is a cool location to visit if you're ever in the area. RT77 still runs through it to this day. A sign at the tunnel reads...... Gateway to Red River Gorge, Nada tunnel (measuring 13'x12'x900') was constructed to haul logs via narrow gauge railroad from timber operations in the gorge. Construction began in Dec. 1910 and was completed in Sept. 1911. Rock and dirt were removed by dynamite, steam drills and hand tools. One man was killed during tunnel construction when he attempted to thaw frozen dynamite which exploded when he set it near a fire. A 25-ton and a 35-ton Climax locomotive were used to haul logs through the tunnel starting in 1912. The first load of logs became jammed in the tunnel and had to be dynamited free. It was enlarged to accommodate the large logs common to the area. The railroad carried the logs 15 miles to a mill at Clay City. At one time it was the largest sawmill in the eastern United States. Here's a good inside pic I found of the tunnel on the web. I have some I took somewhere but can't find where I put them.

The head of the group got to NADA Tunnel and took some pics...
.... and another pee break while waiting on the rest of the group.
The rest of the group showed up and brought the rain with them. We learned that Paul had lowsided on one of the wet curves. Thankfully he and the bike were in good shape. The rain really unloaded on us shortly after this pic and would continue to dump on us for the next several miles.
We ran into dry roads a little later and had a good ride on in to my in-laws spare house over in town. My father-in-law's grandpa built this house in the early 40's and it's been in the family ever since. We had the cookout here since it's got plenty of parking and room to have a crowd over.
Some shots from the cookout.

Picking the group up at the hotel for Day 2 of the JJJ.
Stopping for a break at a cool old general store in Martha, KY. This is a classic store where you can buy anything from food, ammo, shovels and washers, dryers and kitchen stoves.
Second stop of the day at an abandoned gas station outside Inez, KY.
Paul's bike came out of his spill with only a few scratches.
We had lunch at Grandad's in Inez, KY. Good grub was had here. UP's tails had everyone's attention.

Rolling into Gilbert, WV a National Guard truck lost a part of it's load of water in the road. This area had been hit HARD by recent flooding.
There are some great roads in the area, just remember to share the road with the coal trucks.
Following John for a bit trying to get some good pics of him.
Over the shoulder shot of the group.
Got a good shot of John on the roll.
And a not so good shot of Ron. Sorry Ron.

Sitting in traffic in Gilbert, WV while the Guard cleans up the road. This little town got hammered by floods. I was wishing I had a gallon of the water that was laying in the road a few miles back right about now.
It's gonna take a while to recover from all the damage in this little town.

Sure felt good to get in the wind again.
Following Paul a bit trying to get some good pics of him.
We ran up on a BAD wreck just minutes after it happened. Didn't want to rubber neck at them, but a few people must have got hurt pretty good cause we passed several Ambulances headed that way a few miles down the road. Sure pray that everyone was okay.
Another stop for break.

I didn't get any pics of dinner on Day2 cause I forgot my camera in the hotel. Lunch stop on Day3. Charlie led us to this place and it was GREAT food.
I skipped dinner on Day3 when we arrived at FriendSTOC. I was full from the lunch we ate earlier and beat and just didn't feel like getting back on the bike. I also skipped the group rides on Saturday. I thought about going out solo and running across the mountains on 250 a few times but decided to wash my bike and do some laundry and just chill out at the hotel instead. It was a nice day of rest. I did take a couple pics of some neat buildings in Harrisonburg though.
Nice and clean again. It ain't the ST for all day comfort on the slab, but #509 wet sure is nice on the backroads.
I also let my camera in the hotel for the dinner and auction cause I knew there'd be plenty others taking many pics. I stopped for gas on the way home today at a cool old store in WV. When I walked in my shoulders rubbed both sides of the door they were so narrow. The lady behind the counter said it was built in 1854 when WV was still VA before the civil war. I sat on the porch and drank an orange pop and just though about all the people who have sat there over that many years, all the lies that have been told on that bench and how the men who built it would never imagine that many years from then a guy from KY riding a two wheeled machine with the power of 125 horses would be sitting there while on a trip covering 425 miles in only 7 hours.
This one's for you Mike. The boys love their 'ST shirts'. Thanks again.
That's it. .. |

Jason, thanks for the great riding and the pics. Sure hated to bail out, but sometimes ya gotta. The route you gave me to I64 worked great. Nice wide shoulders...an excellent "deer avoidance" road which is what I needed heading out before daybreak. Had a nice easy ride home...a little rain around Lexington. One of the chickens. AD |
