Mr. T. E. Lawrence was killed riding a Brough Superior, Model SS100. Lawrence purchased this machine in March 1932.

brother c.b..thanks for the query. i DO tend to get tired easily and have my good days like today..still a bit shaky on my legs..but have a good attitude. as for your answer ...although good and close to same looking it's incorrect....erlking is correct! thanks for trying though.

spocky..while correct in part you need to name the orginal company(s)...due to your young age i don't expect you to get this BUT the 'king' should.

what company began as one marque and was then taken over by another to become legendary, then die and was reborn, and what was the name of the original company? This could be the Triumph Motorcycle Company. It began as the as New Triumph Co. Ltd., but changed later to Triumph Cycle Co. Ltd. It was purchased by sold to Jack Sangster, owner of the Ariel marque. In 1951 Triumph was sold to BSA. In 1973 (the same years as my brother's Boniville) Triumph/BAS folded and joined with joined with the Norton-Villiers company to create Norton Villiers Triumph(NVT). In 1983 Triumph closed its doors. And now you can once again by Triumphs. Just a guess though.... BTW the of registration number Lawrence's bike was was GW 2275.

I see it was the Indian Motorcycles you were refering to. The the origianl name would have been Hendee Manufacturing Company. It later was changed to Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company in Springfield, Massachusetts.

You go me on the early HD question. I suppose it could be the original nickname of "Silent Gray Fellow" (considering HD is famous for its sound) or the fact the first bikes had regular bike pedals to get the bike started... I am stumped. I hope you let me know...

great reponses boys....the erlking is also correct with triumph however indian was just a bit off,as mr. hendee was the original conceptualizer of the INDIAN name. originally it was ace-henderson, indian used the henderson based four cyl for years.

one of the most unusual "motorcycles" produced abeit only one, was a contraption called the "WELSLEY GYROCAR". IT HAD TWO SEP PASS. COMPARTMENTS, SEATING TWO IN FRONT AND 4 IN BACK LIKE CAR SEATING. it had only two wheels as a motorcycle and was able to stand on it's own at a stop because of a huge gyroscope spinning between the two compartments. i'll have spock scan it soon....quite amazing really. it was produced in the '20's.

the answer re h/d? will wait for a few more h/d riders to post....c'mon s.phil..what do you think it might be? anyone else out there have an idea? don't be shy..it's not as easy as one might think but not so hard either. the king notwithstanding, made a good stab at it..not bad...not right...but not bad!

Rob-I meant, of course, to say Brough Superior. Must have been one of those "senior moments" which come more frequent these days!!!

I have to respectfully disagree with you on the original name of the Indian Company. "In 1901 George M. Hendee, a high wheel champ and C. Oscar Hedstrom, also a racer, pooled money and inventive genius to open the Hendee Manufacturing Company that later was changed to Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company in Springfield, Massachusetts."(ref: Indian Motorcycle museum) The Henderson Motorcycle Company began in Detroit, where its motorcycles were manufactured from 1912 through 1917. Tom Henderson was President and designer William Henderson was Vice-President. Tom and William Henderson joined the new venture in Chicago, along with engineer Arthur Lemon. These three remained connected with the Excelsior company until 1919, at which time they left to organize the Ace motorcycle company. Indian acquired the manufacturing rights to the Ace. The Ace design formed the basis of the four-cylinder Indians made from 1927 to 1942.

aahhh.well now..we have a debate...so i will give you my research article quote.... 'the ace company was set up by the henderson bros. in 1919 then later swallowed up by indian." HENDERSON WAS SET UP IN 1911 and was literally the "rolls royce of m/c's with a long wheelbase and a four cyl.1068 -1300cc engines. the design was used by ACE WHICH WAS SET UP BY THE HENDERSON BROS. ace was bought out by INDIAN in 1927..thus becoming an original company mandated by using existing ace-henderson motors from it's earliest inception. again heady stuff here..and open to some debate as indian enthusiasts tend to swing the way i do and others look at some old history archival texts. we as enthusiasts tend to "wish" the latter were factual but really i believe, sadly erlking is as correct as i.

good going erlking.....lets continue on digging into the past of these wonderful bits of our motorcycling history. european m/c makers dominated the early yrs. by way of experimentation to culmination of a finished product many of which ended in production for the masses.

in retrospect i believe i will conceed to "the king' on the indian......i prostate myself humbly at your feet, for you ARE the master! you are absolutely correct regarding triumph.

now.if we continue on with spocks next request it should prove quite interesting indeed! i've got a few that may be acceptable....i think spocky even participated in one or two himself.

once again ..the erlking is VERY knowledgeable! I LIKE IT!

shoot spocky....i have tried to forget that
unmentionable motel (alpine-village) as possibly the worst of the worst. at least you had the newer section with only a few ants and bugs....i had the executive suit if you recall. you know .the one with the broken window screen that let in the mosquitoes and the room with the acetate and green rubber blanket. who could forget the metal shower stall that wasn't put together properly. like a keystone cops comedy..i put my hand against one side to balance myself and the whole thing collapsed around me except for the nozzle part which kept on spraying lustily away!
the dead flies that covered the room were a big bonus too. all that at a bargain rate if $75.oo usf per night...3 day min. and yes if you as much as sat on another bed you were charged the 3 day min. rate ! ahh. i remember it well! damn! thanks ALOT spock!

Ah, Mr. Hart, you better stop talking about me like that or I will have to buy a new helmet to fit my swelled head.
I thought everyone would enjoy a picture of that Wolseley Gyrocar/motorcycle.

Here is another one of - the 1967 Gyro-X. "Its the Gyro-X, an aerodynamically sleek, two-wheeled sports car that tracks dicstraight down the most slippery of highways, manages 125 mph from a tiny 80-hp engine, can't skid or flip, and literally flies an airplane, though its two 15-inch wheeles never leave the ground."("Science & Mechanics Sept 1967) Title should read 'Worlds Second Gyroscopic Car'....

Well Mr Spock, I can name a dozen or so British bike manufacturerers that made shaft drive models. Here goes; Sunbeam, Douglas, Velocette, Peerless, Brough, Ariel, Austell, Wilkinson, Vauxhall, Wooler, Stuart, Berwick. I think the closed-body Quasar (a bit like BMW's C1) was a shafty too.

Here's a Wilkinson (the same company that make Wilkinson Sword razors, garden equipment etc). The bike was actually made by the Ogden Motor Company. Just throw in a fairing and you've got a Gold Wing!

Well, I see where Smarthound gets his name! Boy, look at those floorboards and that seat and radiator on the Wilkinson. I hate to make my age so obvious, but I'd like to have one of those.

Suspension doesn't look up to much on that Wilkinson though, C.B.!

Here's a rather scrumptious Velocette Valiant. I like the way the engine is concealed by bodywork. Looks like a common ancestor of a BMW boxer and a Honda CX500!
